Tsavo is Kenya at its most vast and untamed. Split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West, the combined park is larger than some European countries — over 22,000 square kilometres of red-dusted elephants, volcanic landscapes, and a wildness that's increasingly rare in modern safari destinations. If you want space, solitude, and the feeling of having Africa to yourself — Tsavo delivers.

Common questions about Tsavo

Why do Tsavo's elephants look red?

It's the volcanic soil. Tsavo's earth is rich in iron-oxide red dust, and the elephants spend their days dust-bathing in it. Their natural grey skin gets coated in the distinctive russet colour — sometimes vivid, sometimes subtle, but unmistakable. It's a quirk specific to Tsavo and one of the most photographed phenomena in Kenyan safari.

Tsavo East is more open, drier, with bigger sky and the iconic red elephants. Tsavo West is greener, more dramatic in topography, and home to Mzima Springs and the Shetani lava flows. For first-time visitors with limited time, Tsavo East is more wildlife-dense. For travellers who want landscape variety and unique attractions, Tsavo West rewards the effort. Combining both is ideal if you have four or more nights.

Tsavo is best as a second or third safari, or as part of a longer Kenya itinerary. The wildlife density is lower than the Mara, the distances are vast, and the experience leans toward solitude over guaranteed action. For first-time safari travellers, the Mara or Amboseli usually deliver more wildlife per day. But for those returning to Kenya, Tsavo's scale and rawness is unforgettable.

This is one of Tsavo's quiet advantages. It sits on the road and rail line between Nairobi and Mombasa, making it a natural stopover for travellers heading to Diani Coast. A two- to three-night Tsavo break breaks up the journey beautifully and adds wilderness to a beach trip. Most travellers fly to Tsavo, then continue to the coast.
