What is the Samburu Special Five?
Five species found in northern Kenya that you won't see in the Mara or Amboseli: reticulated giraffe (with their distinctive crisp pattern), Grevy's zebra (larger and more endangered than common zebras), gerenuk (the long-necked antelope that stands on hind legs to feed), beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich (with blue legs rather than pink). Spotting all five is a quiet badge of honour for safari enthusiasts.
Is Samburu safe to visit?
Yes — the reserve and the established camps and lodges are entirely safe and well-managed. The wider region of northern Kenya has had isolated security advisories in the past, but these don't affect the Samburu safari circuit, which is well-monitored and regularly travelled by international visitors. We monitor conditions and use only established, vetted accommodation.
How does Samburu compare to the Mara?
Samburu offers a different Africa. It's drier, hotter, more dramatic in landscape, and significantly less visited. You'll see different wildlife and meet a different culture. For travellers on their second or third Kenya safari, Samburu is often the highlight precisely because it's not the postcard.
How do I get to Samburu?
Light aircraft flights from Nairobi take roughly an hour and are by far the easiest option. Driving takes six to seven hours through some genuinely beautiful country — fine if you want a road journey, but most travellers fly. We arrange all transfers as part of your itinerary.
What about Samburu cultural visits?
We work only with community-led visits where the Samburu people themselves host you on their terms — not staged performances. You'll spend time with families, learn about their traditions, and contribute directly to community projects. It's one of the most genuine cultural experiences in Kenya, but only if approached respectfully. We'll brief you fully before any visit.
