Wild in the City

Wild in the City is a full-day journey through Nairobi's most surprising contradiction — wilderness fifteen minutes from your hotel. We start before sunrise in Nairobi National Park, where lions, rhinos, and giraffes hunt and graze with the city skyline on the horizon. By mid-morning we're in Karen for craft coffee. Lunch is in a garden you'd never find on your own. The contrast is the experience.

Common questions about Wild in the City

Will I really see big cats and rhinos in Nairobi?

Likely yes — Nairobi National Park has roughly 30 lions, a healthy population of rhinos (both black and white), and the highest concentration of leopards per square kilometre in Kenya. Sightings on a morning drive are very high probability, though not guaranteed — it's still wild. The park also has hundreds of giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and over 400 bird species.

Different products entirely. The Mara is a multi-day immersion in vast wilderness with overwhelming wildlife concentration. Nairobi National Park is a half-morning experience with the unique novelty of a city skyline backdrop. For travellers without time for the Mara, it's an excellent introduction. For travellers also doing the Mara, it's an unexpected curtain-raiser. Don't expect the Mara experience — expect a different one.

The park opens at 6am and animals are most active in the cool hours immediately after sunrise. By 9am, they've usually retreated to shade. Starting at 6:30am gives us the best two hours of game viewing in good light. If an early start isn't possible, we can run the experience starting at 7:30 or 8am, but expect quieter wildlife.

Wildlife in Nairobi National Park is often more visible after rain — animals come out into the open. We use 4x4 vehicles with all-weather capability. The Karen and lunch portions of the day are weather-protected. Diani-style heavy rain is rare in Nairobi outside specific months. We monitor forecasts and reschedule rare washouts at no charge.

Yes — children of all ages can join the game drive portion. The pace and length of the full day works best for kids 8 and over; younger children typically prefer a half-day version (game drive + Karen coffee) which we can arrange.
